Lapis lazuli is one of the ancient jade, lapis lazuli in the "green" generally refers to its main color is blue, divided into sky blue, dark blue, green blue, violet orchid and other colors, among which dark blue as precious.
Lapis Lazuli: An Ancient Legend
In ancient Egypt thousands of years BC, lapis lazuli was worth as much as gold. In ancient India, Iran and other countries, lapis lazuli, turquoise and coral are all precious jade varieties. Lapis lazuli was often an important item on the list of tributes to Egypt and was one of the most important gifts given by the king of Babylon to the king of Egypt. Lapis lazuli is also known as "emperor blue" because of its "color like the sky", and it is also the main raw material of natural blue pigment. In our country, the blue color of lapis lazuli is also a color of hope, symbolizing peace, auspiciousness and kindness, so the carvings made of lapis lazuli with blue as the base color represent auspiciousness. The ancients also called lapis lazuli "dark blue star color stone". It was developed into a cosmetic to draw the eyebrows, and its pieces were made into screens inlaid with pearls.
The phenomenon of shoddy lapis lazuli in the market has repeatedly appeared, and because lapis lazuli has not been valued before, most players have not been able to understand the identification methods of lapis lazuli in detail.
Identification methods
1. Look at the color
The identification of lapis lazuli first depends on whether the color is blue or not. If the color is too light, it means that the calcite content is higher and the hardness of the stone itself will be low. If the color is too dark, it means that the pyrite content of Venus on the stone is too high, which causes the lapis lazuli to be dull. Therefore, lapis lazuli with a rich blue color, pure, uniform, shiny, and no or slightly striped Venus is of high value.
Second, look at the structure
There are many ways to counterfeit lapis lazuli. The lower level is to use marble to impersonate, and the more advanced point is to use sodalite and blue ashlar impersonation that are very similar to lapis lazuli. Sodalite and lapis lazuli are very similar in terms of mineral structure, color, etc. The difference is that galite does not contain pyrite, the density is relatively low, and the coarse grain structure can be seen with the naked eye. If irradiated with a UV lamp, sodalite fluoresces orange-red, while lapis lazuli fluoresces white. Blue ashlar is also blue in color, but when exposed to ultraviolet light, it also fluoresces orange-red.
3. Alcohol identification
The most common and effective identification method is to contact lapis lazuli with alcohol or acidic substances, and dyed lapis lazuli will quickly fade when exposed to acid or alcohol. The use of highly concentrated medical alcohol is recommended here. Specific method: Take an appropriate amount of alcohol with a cotton swab, and repeatedly wipe the surface of lapis lazuli for about half a minute, if the blue one appears on the cotton swab, it is dyed lapis lazuli, and the colorless one is natural lapis lazuli.
Now the method of imitating lapis lazuli emerges in endlessly, and now there are a lot of lapis lazuli imitation patterns, and the most inferior lapis lazuli dyeing and glue filling, improving brightness and color, can also improve the integrity of lapis lazuli. "In the past, lapis lazuli dyeing and glue filling detection can be distinguished by decolorizing agent, but now illegal merchants will dye lapis lazuli with glue, so that lapis lazuli can not be taken off." Dyed lapis lazuli can be identified by looking at the "white spot", the lapis lazuli with dye is generally brightly colored, and the blue color of the dye can still be seen in the white spot, which will give people an uncomfortable feeling. Natural lapis lazuli is blue and white, if you see a hazy blue layer on the white part, you should pay attention, it may be fake.
